Yangarra Estate Vineyard
Posted in:
Yangarra Estate stands as a testament to the power of terroir and sustainable viticulture. Located in the north-east of McLaren Vale, South Australia, Yangarra's 170-hectare property boasts nearly 90 hectares of vineyards, with the remaining land preserved for native flora and fauna. This balance enhances the symbiotic relationship between the vines and their natural environment, creating wines that truly reflect their place of origin.
Specialising in southern Rhône grape varieties, Yangarra's old bush vine Grenache is the cornerstone of their portfolio. They also cultivate Shiraz, Roussanne, and more obscure varieties like Bourboulenc and Picpoul Noir. This diverse array of grapes thrives in the estate's unique combination of ancient geology, moderate altitude, and Mediterranean climate, producing wines with exceptional flavour and character.
Since 2008, Yangarra has been dedicated to organic and biodynamic farming practices, officially certified since 2012. This commitment to sustainability is evident in their use of biodynamic preparations, natural composting processes, and grazing sheep to control vineyard grasses. These methods enhance soil health and promote a balanced ecosystem, leading to healthier vines and higher-quality grapes.
In the winery, a gentle, hands-on approach is paramount. Techniques like wild fermentation, basket pressing, and the use of amphoras and large oak foudres ensure that each wine retains the natural characteristics of the vineyard. This dedication to detail and respect for tradition results in classic, timeless wines that resonate with the authentic essence of Yangarra's unique terroir.
At the helm is Winemaker and General Manager Peter Fraser, whose nearly two decades at Yangarra have been marked by innovation and a deep respect for the land. Recognized as "Winemaker of the Year" by prestigious publications, Peter's sensitive winemaking approach focuses on texture and purity. Vineyard Manager Michael Lane, instrumental in the estate's transition to biodynamic practices, ensures that the vineyards are managed with the utmost care and respect for the environment.
Yangarra's wines are a confident reflection of their land, crafted with an uncompromising attention to detail and a profound respect for nature. Whether you're savoring their renowned Grenache or exploring their unique Rhône varietals, each sip offers a taste of the exceptional place from which it came. Visit their stunning cellar door, overlooking the vineyards and amphorae, to experience the magic of Yangarra Estate first-hand.
