Murdoch Hill

Nestled in the serene Adelaide Hills, Murdoch Hill Winery stands as a testament to a legacy steeped in familial love and dedication. It all began in 1939 when the patriarch of the Downer family acquired this picturesque expanse of land. With each passing generation, the torch of stewardship has been passed down, culminating in a thriving vineyard and winery that encapsulates the essence of its rich history.

In 1998, a pivotal moment unfolded as the parents of the Downer boys tenderly planted the first vines, laying the groundwork for what would become a cherished family endeavour. Today, the vineyards are a labour of love, meticulously tended to by the third generation of the Downer clan.

At Murdoch Hill, family isn't just a label; it's the cornerstone upon which every endeavour is built. Led by Chief Winemaker Michael Downer, whose extensive oenology education and global experience infuse every bottle with a touch of finesse, the family collectively pours their heart and soul into crafting wines that epitomize the Adelaide Hills region.

Sustainability isn't just a buzzword at Murdoch Hill; it's a way of life. With a deep reverence for the land, the vineyards are managed with a holistic approach, eschewing harmful chemicals in favour of organic practices that preserve the integrity of the soil and its delicate ecosystem.

In the winery, a minimalist philosophy reigns supreme. Wild yeasts and gentle extraction techniques are employed, allowing the true essence of the vineyard to shine through in every sip. This commitment to authenticity ensures that each bottle is a pure expression of the region's unique terroir.

The journey of Murdoch Hill is one of resilience and evolution, marked by milestones that honour its storied past while embracing the promise of the future. The Artisan Series, with wines named after vintage horse-drawn carriages, pays homage to the grandfather whose passion for collecting inspired generations to come.

As Murdoch Hill celebrates 25 years of winemaking, the Downer family looks back with gratitude and forward with anticipation. From humble beginnings on a family farm to international acclaim, their unwavering dedication to quality has remained unwavering.

At Murdoch Hill, the spirit of family permeates every aspect of the winemaking process, from vine to bottle. It's a legacy built on love, nurtured by tradition, and destined to endure for generations to come.
