Raspberry, blackberry and juicy red plum jump out first, followed by violets, cracked pepper and a good hit of savoury spice. There’s a lovely earthy, granitic feel underneath the fruit too, bringing graphite, dried herbs and a touch of wildness. Rather than being big and heavy, the palate is vibrant, supple and full of energy. Fine tannins give everything shape, while bright acidity keeps the dark fruit feeling fresh and alive. There’s oak in the background, but it plays nicely, adding texture and spice rather than taking over. Chris Catlow’s site-first approach suits Beechworth beautifully, producing Shiraz with perfume, detail and a real sense of place.
