The S.C. Pannell ‘Sunrise 99’ Grenache 2022 is a revelation from McLaren Vale’s historic Little Branch Vineyard. From gentler curves of 1920-planted bush vines rooted in Blewitt Springs’ old sands, this Grenache shows deep red fruit—wild raspberry, kirsch and cranberry—then unfurls florals of rose petal and hints of sweet licorice. Underneath lies a savoury undertow of baked earth, graphite and ironstone. The palate is structured yet elegant: fine tannins cover juicy fruit, acid lifts with precision, and subtle oak supports without dominating. Bottled without fining or filtration and released from what is the block’s 99th vintage, this wine has poise and longevity—glorious now, with decades ahead for evolution.
