Luigi Baudana Barolo Serralunga 2021
Importers thoughts - This Barolo blends together Nebbiolo from three beautiful vineyards of Serralunga d’Alba: Baudana, Cerretta and a small parcel of Costabella. It is a classic wine in the making, with a clear signature of these terroirs and their ancient soils.
Baudana and Costabella lie on the west slope of Serralunga, at a confluence of the Tortonian and Serravallian plateaux. Cerretta runs on the opposite slope, with a south-east exposure, over the ancient Formazione di Lequio market by a deep vein of red clay.
In 2021, the fruit for the Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba was picked on 13th and 14th October. Vinification was carried out in vertical tini, with gentle punchdowns and rinsing of the cap. Maceration lasted 45 days on average, with a partially submerged cap. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation occurred the following spring. The wine matured for 26 months, mainly in Slavonian casks of 15, 17, 25 hectolitres, and a few neutral barrels, before bottling on 28th June 2024.
The 2021 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba features a multifaceted nose of rose petals, blackcurrant, plum, fresh dates, balsamic notes, and sweet spices. The mouthfeel has a very long and elegant finish, with leather notes, tobacco, white pepper, dark cherries, mint and black tea. – Squadra Vajra
Critics thoughts - This wine shows aromas of flowers, pressed roses, dried cherries, red currants and balsamic. Medium-bodied, it shows firm, dusty tannins with prominent freshness and a tight aftertaste. Try from 2026. 94 points. James Suckling, jamessuckling.com Jan 2025
The Luigi Baudana 2021 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba shows rich fruit delivered as cooked cherry with background tones of cinnamon, red rose and ferrous earth. The tannins are sweet but also firm, and you get plenty of streamlined fruit on the close. The three sites used in the blend are Baudana, Costa Bella and Cerretta. 94 points. Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate Jan 2025
The 2021 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba is superb. Creamy and resonant in the glass, with gorgeous mid-palate depth, the 2021 is a terrific wine in its peer group. Rose petal, incense, blood orange, dried herbs and cedar confer notable complexity. This is a gorgeous wine in every way. The Baudana Serralunga Barolo is one of so many wines in Piedmont that overachieves. Vineyard sources are young vines in Baudana and Ceretta, plus Costabella. 92 points.
