Giangirolami Grechetto Propizio IGP 2024

Michaels thoughts - Donato Giangirolami is a family owned and operated estate near Ninfa, south of Rome, with multi-generational ties to region (Pontine plain & Castelli Romani of Lazio). Giangirolami was an early adopted of strict organic principles, undertaking certification procedures as early as 1993. The sites for this Grechetto are located in the maritime influenced hills and planted on the classic tufa/volcanic soils of region. The wine is made from 100% Grechetto, an anomaly in a region that is famed for blends that are consumed in youth due to the proximity to the major city in the region, Rome. The wine sees soft pressing of grapes followed by batonnage (lees stirring, like most Chardonnay) for a 6-8 month period before final blending and bottling. The result is a wine that showcases supreme texture and phenolic development, the complexity comes as a balance of primary and secondary flavour characteristics making it a superb wine both with and without food.Ā  Michael Morgan

As the name indicates, Grechetto origins could be found in Greece. Nevertheless the grape has been grown in Italy for so long that it is now widely regarded as being native to Umbria.Ā  Since the late 20th Century, its reputation has significantly improved. Grechetto is now considered as one of the finest white wine grapes in the region.
