G.D. Vajra Barolo DOCG Ravera 2022
In their words - "I am intrigued by Ravera’s indomitable personality. It is crisp like the sound of a Telecaster, straight and electric." - Giuseppe Vaira
The 2022 Barolo Ravera reveals an unexpected poise for its youth. It opens with aromas of dark cherry, blood orange, marzipan and star anise, accented by cedarwood, purple flowers, tobacco leaf, and subtle earthy tones. Hints of iron, wet clay, and licorice add depth, giving the bouquet a noble, almost sanguine character. On the palate, the wine is deep and powerful, supported by broad, finely woven tannins. Juicy red and dark fruits unfold with vibrant intensity, while sweet spice, aromatic herbs, and a saline mineral note bring energy and lift. The finish is earthy, persistent, and quietly monumental, leaving a long, savory.
Critics thoughts - The 2022 Barolo Ravera pours a bright medium red color and was bottled the same day as the Coste di Rose. The nose shows more depth and takes time to open, revealing notes of fresh cherries, graphite, and iron. On the palate, it has broader shoulders and firmer tannins, with greater mineral depth and richness. 96+ Jeb Dunnuck
Tea, hibiscus, orange rind, sandalwood and dried flowers. Really aromatic and absorbing. Mediumbodied, with a transparent, ethereal sense of fruit and a backbone of tannins that gives definition all the way to the end. Unique balance, from the famed vineyard in Novello. 95 points James Suckling
The G.D. Vajra 2022 Ravera is another impressive effort for the family’s 2022 Barolos. It opens with aromas recalling grilled herb, new leather, camphor and forest floor that on the full-bodied palate transform into dried cherry, raspberry tart, bitter orange and licorice. Notes of dried sage and thyme linger on the finish alongside firm, close-grained tannins that jump in and leave a good grip. 93 points Kerin O'Keefe
