Domaine Engel orange in Alsace 2024
If you like your wines with a little personality and a healthy disregard for convention, Domaine Engel's Orange in Alsace is going to be right up your alley. Hailing from the beautiful vineyards of Alsace in northeastern France, this wonderfully expressive orange wine brings together six traditional white grape varieties, each adding its own little something to the party. Pinot Gris leads the charge, joined by Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, Muscat and Gewurztraminer, creating a fascinating blend of fragrance, texture and spice. The nose is an absolute delight, bursting with blood orange, candied citrus peel and fragrant spices, alongside hints of quince and delicate floral aromatics. Extended skin contact gives the wine its gorgeous amber-orange glow, while bringing a lovely silky texture and gentle tannic grip to the palate. There's plenty happening here, with juicy citrus, savoury tea-like notes and warming spice unfolding beautifully as the wine opens up in the glass. Despite its generous character, a lively thread of freshness keeps everything wonderfully balanced and inviting.
Bottled without filtration, it retains a slightly hazy appearance that only adds to its rustic charm and expressive personality. The finish is long, fragrant and gently savoury, with lingering orange zest and beautifully integrated tannins. A brilliantly characterful Alsatian orange wine that proves there's plenty of fun to be had when white grapes
