Allegrini Amarone 2020
In their words - The Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG is a deep ruby red where the full body is perfectly balanced with the refreshing acidity of the sip. It is a very intense and complex wine, rich in black fruits like black cherries and prune with hints of violet, black pepper, mediterranean herbs such as thyme. The nose goes deeper with hints of forest floor, grafite and tertiary aromas such as nuts, figs and vanilla. The sip is intense, with firm ripe tannins that are really well integrated in the wine and a very long finish. The wine could age for further 20 years, developing more tertiary notes.
Critics thoughts - Floral and aromatic, silky and balanced, Allegrini's 2020 Amarone Classico is a charming red. The grapes benefitted from a drawn-out harvest which allowed perfect picking times for each plot. Spiced plum, raspberry, blackberry and dark cherry are imprinted with some baking spices and orange peel. Bold and with a touch of sweetness (3.4g/l), it's kept in check by huge acidity and a balsamic herb finish, which lift it up and balance it on its toes. A blend of 45% Corvina, 45% Corvinone, 5% Rondinella and 5% Oseleta in vineyards at between 450 and 520m above sea level. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2040. 95 Points Decanter
A bold interpretation of Amarone. Refined aromas of licorice, dried cherries, camphor and menthol reverberate across a compact, dense mid-palate. At this early stage, the tannins feel largely oak-derived. But there is nothing blunt about them and there is ample mineral infusion and freshness. Bottle age will serve this rich Amarone well, placating the primary fruit while transforming the wine into something far more complex. Very good. Drink or hold. 94 points James Suckling
Quite fragrant. Bitter cherry, cigar and sandalwood. Cranberry and cassis etched fruit with thyme and violets. Strong yet integrated tannins. Bone dry and fresh. Remarkably elegant for an Amarone. 17 points JancisRobinson.com, 05 Dec 2024
