Jean Foillard Fleurie 2023
Gamay could meditate, it’d come back as this wine. Grown on sun-kissed granitic slopes and made with zero sulphur, Foillard Fleurie is all about purity and balance. Fermented whole bunch and carbonically, it keeps things juicy, fresh and oh-so-lively — like Beaujolais that’s been doing yoga in the Alps. Expect a swirl of floral perfume, crushed red berries, a touch of herbs, and a streak of minerality that speaks straight from the soil. Medium-bodied but full of quiet energy, it’s the kind of bottle that disappears faster than you meant it to.
Critics thoughts - The 2023 Fleurie comes from south-facing vines, the first to be picked within the "Champagne" lieu-dit. It has a little more fruit intensity than the Côte du Py, with raspberry, blackcurrant, allspice and light white pepper scents. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, gentle grip, sapid red fruit and a tightly coiled, mineral-laden finish.
