Bill Downie stands as a luminary among contemporary winemakers, his influence extending far and wide across the industry. Alongside his wife, Rach, Bill has served as a beacon of inspiration for countless producers, from established names to emerging talents. Their genuine legacy lies not only in the exceptional wines they craft but also in their unwavering commitment to authenticity and what truly matters in the world of wine. Despite their widespread impact, Bill and Rach maintain a humble existence on their farm just outside of Yarragon in Gippsland, embodying the essence of true artisans.

Before the advent of Cathedral Pinot Noir, Bill's wines were coveted treasures, released in limited quantities each January/February. Adorned with artwork by the renowned Mambo artist Reg Mombasa, these bottles have attained iconic status, distinguished by their distinctive bottle shape, dark glass, minimalist front labels, and wax seals. This year, enthusiasts can anticipate the unveiling of only two single-site wines: the Camp Hill and Bullswamp vineyard releases. The addition of a revamped Mornington label adds to the anticipation, marking a cherished return for a beloved wine.

Reflecting on the 2023 vintage, Bill notes the complexity and enjoyability of the wines, a collection that includes, for the first time since 2016, a bottling from the Mornington Peninsula. Despite facing challenges such as poor flowering, resulting in significantly reduced yields from their Bull Swamp and Camp Hill vineyards, the quality of the grapes remains uncompromised. While these wines are approachable now, Bill assures that patience will be duly rewarded, promising a sensory journey unlike any other. Through their steadfast dedication to their craft, Bill and Rach Downie continue to redefine the boundaries of winemaking, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of Australian wine.
